For one week in March, the College Transit Challenge will encourage students, faculty, and staff members at St. Louis Community College, Saint Louis University, Southwestern Illinois College, University of Missouri–St. Louis, and Washington University in St. Louis to give transit a try or use it more often.
Members of these college and university communities are eligible for a free or deeply discounted Metro U-Pass, which allows for unlimited rides on MetroLink and MetroBus. To promote the program and increase use of passes, Citizens for Modern Transit, Metro Transit, and St. Clair County Transit District are teaming up to host this challenge. From Friday, March 3, to Friday, March 10, riders can track their transit trips via text and social media for chances to win prizes. The institution with the highest participation will win the College Transit Challenge and claim bragging rights.
The St. Louis region lags behind most of its peers in “transportation choice,” or percent of workers who choose to take transit, walk, bike, carpool, work from home, or commute by any mode other than driving alone. This friendly competition will highlight the importance of transportation choice and encourage potential riders to reconsider transit.
